Ahead of US President Donald Trump and US First Lady Melania Trump trip to India on the 24th of February, a number of misleading and unverified claims are doing rounds on social media. We have debunked some of them down below.
A 1:49 seconds video is being widely shared claiming that fruit-carts are being destroyed by a bulldozer in Gujrat, in the name of preparation ahead Trump's visit. A twitter user shared the video along with a caption, "With Trump's visit, Gujarat becomes a developed state. The poor traders were forcibly evicted."
Another twitter user also shared the same video saying, "Preparations are in full swing to welcome Donald Trump in Gujarat with poor people’s livelihood being taken away."
In our investigation, we found that this video is not from Gujrat but from an eviction drive near Unit-1 Market in Bhubaneswar on the 20th of January.
With the help of a reverse image search, we found a tweet by a web-news portal, The News Insight. They have shared the same video on 25th of January with a caption, "Visuals from the Eviction Drive near Unit-1 Market in #Bhubaneswar."
On further investigating using relevant keywords, we found a different video of the same incident. The video was shared by a YouTube channel with a title, " Fruit Carts Destroyed During BMC's Eviction Drive Near Unit 1 Market In Bhubaneswar."
A number of similarities, including a man in half-sweater in both the videos, ascertains that the videos are of the same incident, recorded from a different angle.
Another piece of misinformation is being widely shared claiming that a wall in Ahmedabad is being built to hide poverty from the US President. Journalist Vinod Dua and Ravish Kumar in their shows made similar claims.
However, this is a false claim. Ahmedabad Municipal Commissioner Vijay Nehra debunked this claim and clarified that the decision to build a 4 feet wall was taken 2 months ago when there was no confirmation of Donald Trump's visit to India, to prevent encroachments on footpath & road.
Congress Politician, Salman Nizami shared a set of pictures targetting to present a real picture of India ahead of Trump's trip.
In one out of four pictures, painters are doing some artwork on the wall, and the rest three pictures are of slum areas.
In our investigation, we found these three pictures to be misleading as all of them were taken at least 11 years ago.
First picture
We found this picture to be used in a blog that was published back in 2009. We were not able to ascertain the location where this picture was taken but as it used in 2009, it is at least a decade old.
Second picture
We found this second picture on an image providing website, Alamy Images. According to the website, the image was captured in Ahemdabad Gujrat and was captured in February 1996.
This means, that this image shows a 24-year-old picture of Ahemdabad.
Third Image
We found this image Trekearth.com. According to the website, this picture is from Ahemdabad and was captured in 2000.
Clearly, as all these pictures are used in 2020, it can easily mislead people by making them believe that these pictures show India in 2020.
